How To Apply for UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Exam 2020

Candidates are required to apply online only by using the website https://upsconline.nic.in. Brief instructions for filling up the online Application Form have been given in Appendix-II. Detailed instructions are available on the above mentioned website.

 

Last date for submission of applications for UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Exam 2020

  • The Online Applications can be filled up to 15th October, 2019 till 06:00 P.M.
  • The online Applications can be withdrawn from 10.2019 to 28.10.2019 till 06:00 P.M.

Vacancy, Posts, Categories

The categories of post to which recruitment is to be made on the results of this Examination and the approximate number of vacancies in the various posts are given below:-

Category-I : (Posts in the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines).

Geologist, Group A79
Geophysicist, Group A05
Chemist. Group A15

Category – II : (Posts in the Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of  Water Resources)

(i) Junior Hydrogeologists (Scientist B), Group A : 03

Eligibility Conditions

(I) Nationality

A candidate must be either:

  • a Citizen of India, or
  • a subject of Nepal, or
  • a subject of Bhutan, or
  • a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India. or
  • a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the Examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.

Age Limits:

A candidate for this Examination must have attained the age criteria as prescribed below:-

  • For Geologist and Geophysicist and Chemist (Group ‘A’) in the Geological Survey of India, an attached office of Ministry of Mines, Government of India: A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on the first day of the month of January of the year in which the Examination is to be held (i.e. as on 1st January, 2020] i.e. he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1988 and not later than 1st January 1999.
  • For Jr. Hydro geologist (Scientist B) (Group A) in Central Ground water Board, Ministry of Water Resources:-

Must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained at the age of 35 years on 1st January, 2020 i.e. he/she must have been born not later than 2nd January 1985 and not later than 1st  January 1999.

The upper age limit prescribed above will be further relaxable as follows:

  • Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe.
  • Upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidate belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.
  • Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from the 1st January, 1980 to the 31st day of December, 1989.
  • Upto a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Services Personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof:
  • Upto a maximum of five years in the case of Ex -Servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st January, 2020 and have been released (i) on completion of assignment (including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year from 1st January, 2020) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency, or (ii) on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service or (iii) on invalidment.
  • Upto a maximum of 5 years in the case of ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of 5 years Military Service as on 1st January, 2020 and whose assignment has been extended beyond 5 years and in whose case the Ministry of Defense issue a certificate that they can apply for civil employment and that they will be released on 3 month’s notice on selection from the date of receipt of offer of appointment.
  • Upto a maximum of 10 years in the case of blind, deaf – mute and orthopedically handicapped persons. up to a maximum of 10 years in the case of (a) blindness and low vision; (b) deaf and hard of hearing; (c) locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and muscular dystrophy; (d) autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability and mental illness; and (e) multiple disabilities from amongst persons under clauses (a) to (d) including deaf-blindness.

Minimum Educational Qualification

(a) For Geologists Gr ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India

  • Master’s degree in Geological Science or Geology or Applied Geology or Geo-Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Marine Geology or Earth Science and Resources Management or Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies or Petroleum Geosciences or Petroleum Exploration or Geochemistry or Geological Technology or Geophysical Technology from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or an educational institution established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed university under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956).

(b)   For Geophysicists Gr ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India

M.Sc. in Physics or Applied Physics or M.Sc. (Geophysics) or Integrated M.Sc. (Exploration Geophysics) or M.Sc (Applied Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Marine Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) from a University incorporated by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature in India or other educational institutes established by an Act of the Parliament or declared to be deemed universities under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

(c) For Chemists Gr ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India

M.Sc. in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry from a University incorporated by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature or other educational Institutes established by an Act of the Parliament or declared to be deemed Universities under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 i.e. recognized University.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS:

Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to the Examination, 2020 as per Regulations given in Appendix-II of the rules for the Combined Geo-scientist Examination, 2020 in Gazette of India dated 25th September, 2019.

 

Exam Pattern, Syllabus for UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Exam 2020

The Combined Geo-Scientist Examination will consist of three successive stages (vide Appendix I Section-I below):-

  1. Stage-I : Computer Based Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination (Objective type) having two papers for selection of the candidates for the Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination. Marks secured in the Preliminary Examination will be counted for deciding the final merit;
  2. Stage-II : Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination (Descriptive Type) having three papers for selection of candidates for the Personality Test (Stage-III). Marks secured in the Main Examination will be counted for deciding the final merit; and
  3. Stage-III: Personality Test/Interview
